✓ Correct answer: A. SSRIs target serotonin reuptakeAnswer: SSRIs target serotonin reuptake
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) were developed to treat depression and other mood disorders. These include medications such as fluoxetine (Prozac), sertraline (Zoloft), and paroxetine (Paxil), among others. SSRIs function by blocking the reuptake of serotonin into presynaptic neurons, increasing the level of serotonin available in the synaptic cleft.
While traditional antidepressants may affect multiple neurotransmitter systems, SSRIs specifically and selectively inhibit serotonin reuptake.
